The Collect - Trinity 23

The Latin Collect
Deus Refugium nostrum, et virtus: adesto piis Ecclesiae tuae precibus, auctor ipse pietatis, et praesta; ut, quod fideliter petimus, efficaciter consequamur.

The Collect 1549
GOD, our refuge and strength, which art the author of all godlines, be ready to heare the devoute prayers of thy churche; and graunt that those thynges which we aske faithfully we maye obteine effectually; through Jesu Christe our lorde. Amen.

The Collect 1662
O GOD, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all godliness; Be ready, we beseech thee, to hear the devout prayers of thy Church; and grant that those things which we ask faithfully we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Commentary
Appointed in the Sarum Missal for this Sunday, and in the Tridentine for Pentecost 22, and originally from the Gregorian Sacramentary, this was translated by Cranmer.

Meditation
A very simple prayer that should be the background of all our praying. All godliness, and all strength come as the gift of God, without whom we cannot even pray aright. We ask His aid that we may pray faithfully, and His mercy that rightful prayers be answered. There is a corrollary. We also imply the request that those prayers not stemming from true faith may not be answered, for only God's will can bring a good outcome.
